Amish Covered Bridges

One of the unique aspects of Amish Country, in Lancaster County, are all of the charming covered bridges that cover the Pennsylvania Dutch countryside! This specific area is often called the birthplace of the covered bridge.

In Pennsylvania, from 1820-1900, there were approximately 1,500 covered bridges that were built. There are more preserved bridges in Pennsylvania, than anywhere else in the nation, since many PA residents recognize their historic importance. Today there are around 200 covered bridges, that remain in the state of Pennsylvania, and that includes 28 just in Lancaster County!

While covered bridges are sometimes called “kissing bridges” the reason for the roofs is to protect the bridge’s truss structure from all the weather conditions. Wood rots quickly when exposed to the weather. An uncovered wooden bridge may last 15 to 20 years but a covered bridge should last 100 or more years.

In Lancaster County, bridge traffic includes Amish buggies as well as cars. When you drive through a covered bridge be sure to enjoy a tranquil moment as if you have been transported to another time and place.

We are happy to announce that on The Amish Village property we have our very own unique covered bridge! Be sure to check out the pictures below to see our covered bridge in every season! Also, be sure to visit The Amish Village to experience our covered bridge yourself!
